§02 · Themes of the week

Iran-US pause pulls the geopolitical premium out of crude

Iran and the US paused strikes late Sunday, and oil dropped more than 5% in the first Asian print. Headlines referenced continuing Strait of Hormuz tensions rather than an all-clear. Energy equities went into the pause fully priced — XLE closed the week +3.36%, XOM +6.5%, both at RSI above 84. The direction from here depends on whether the pause holds through the FOMC meeting on Wednesday.

Counter: a pause is a headline, not a treaty. If Tehran fires again in the next ten days, the geopolitical bid comes back and last week's energy leadership resumes without much interruption. This read would be wrong if a second strike round arrives before 2026-08-08.

AI cap-ex disclosure is now a two-sided trade

Nvidia is in talks to guarantee $250bn of financing for an OpenAI data centre, per the WSJ, and separately putting $1bn into South Korea's Naver. Reports last week put Meta in talks for a $10bn Anthropic cloud commitment; AMD said it will sell Anthropic tens of billions in AI servers. The hyperscalers together are on pace to spend more than $500bn on AI this year. The market has started asking who pays for it. Meta -7.87%, Alphabet -7.79%, Amazon -6.12% into their earnings prints. Microsoft trades below both its 200d and 30w moving averages ahead of Wednesday's report.

Counter: Wednesday could put the cap-ex debate to bed if Azure, YouTube and AWS revenue growth outpaces the depreciation ramp. Nvidia's OpenAI guarantee is off-balance-sheet and doesn't hit anyone's cash flow this quarter. The read would be wrong if MSFT, META, GOOGL or AMZN each beat on top-line AND reaffirm or raise cap-ex without a stock hit.

FOMC and Big Tech earnings land in the same 72 hours

The Fed meets Wednesday 2026-07-29. Microsoft and Meta report the same day. Apple and Amazon follow later in the week. Non-farm payrolls print Friday 2026-08-07. Front-end rate expectations and the four largest US equity market caps re-price inside three days. RSIs going in: DIA 32.7, QQQ 33.1, XLY 25 (below both key MAs); XLF 51.9 and XLV 51.5 near mid-range, XLI 40.5 leaning oversold.

Counter: this same setup is short-covering fuel. RSIs at 25-33 on the index proxies leave room for a squeeze if Powell threads the needle and Big Tech results merely meet. The read would be wrong if the S&P closes higher on the week regardless of any Wednesday flush.

§04 · Calendar ahead

The Fed decision and the two largest same-day earnings prints land inside a 24-hour window. Index-proxy RSIs at 25-33 point to a market already positioned defensively — outcomes that only meet expectations can still trigger a squeeze from these levels.
