§01 · Macro snapshot
The US risk-free curve and credit backdrop that Nordic issuers price against.
| Series | Value | Prior | Δ | As of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10Y-2Y Treasury spread | 0.46 pp | 0.47 pp | −0.01 | 2026-08-07 |
| 10Y-3M Treasury spread | 0.78 pp | 0.92 pp | −0.14 | 2026-08-07 |
| HY OAS | 2.70 pp | 2.85 pp | −0.15 | 2026-08-07 |
| Initial jobless claims | 199k | 198k | +1k | 2026-08-01 |
| Sahm rule | −0.03 | 0.07 | −0.10 | 2026-07-01 |
Credit is tightening (HY OAS down 15 bp on the week), the labour print is unremarkable, and the Sahm rule has slipped back below zero. Concretely for Nordic reads: HY OAS at 2.70 pp keeps the funding backdrop supportive for Nordea and DNB spread issuance and for Mærsk/Volvo dollar-linked debt; the 10Y-3M compression of 14 bp is the piece to watch — a further flattening into next week's Norges Bank decision would sharpen the read on Nordic bank NIMs.
§02 · Themes of the week
Sweden's €1.47bn RRF tranche cleared — a compliance marker, not a market event
The Commission approved Sweden's €1.47 billion NextGenerationEU payment request on 2026-07-23 (press release ip_26_1674). That confirms Sweden hit the milestone package for this instalment. Read it narrowly: Nordic RRP delivery is being graded on schedule, and Sweden is not the country the Commission is minded to hold up. The disbursement is too small and too phased to move any equity read this week. The signal is on the Commission's grading temperature. Watch whether Finland's and Denmark's next tranches move on a similar cadence.
Counter-thesis: any RRF headline overstates the transmission from milestone approval to real-economy print; markets have priced disbursement risk down to a rounding error. This would be wrong if: a subsequent Nordic tranche is delayed or cut on milestone failure — that flips the read from "on schedule" to "the Commission is willing to hold Nordic states to spec".

Nordic power splits in two — north near zero, south still triple-digit
The weekly zonal averages tell it cleanly: SE1 €9.68/MWh (−35.1%), SE2 €10.52 (−33.8%), FI €10.36 (−34.2%), NO4 €4.62 (−31.1%). Meanwhile SE4 €23.88, DK1 €109.65, DK2 €111.10, NO2 €109.67. NO2 at €109.67 against NO4 at €4.62 is a ~24x zonal spread inside a single synchronous market. Southern zones stay coupled to continental gas-set prices via the DK1→DE_LU interconnector, which ran +84% week-over-week net export. NO2→DE_LU also +55%. Nordic power is being pushed south. For hydro-heavy generators the payoff is in southern-zone realisation and cross-border spread capture, not the national headline. For Norwegian aluminium and Swedish base-metal converters in the north, this is genuinely cheap input power.
Counter-thesis: Zonal splits this wide are a summer artefact — low August demand — and mean-revert once September load returns. The trade window is short. This would be wrong if: SE3-SE4 congestion persists into the September load ramp and cross-border flows to Germany stay elevated; a hydrology story then becomes a transmission-bottleneck story with a longer implication for capacity-market pricing.

Russia flags a "response" to NATO Finland — a text signal, not a trade
TASS carried an embassy statement that Russia will take "measures in response to growing NATO presence in Finland". This is rhetorical positioning, staying inside the same threat register we have been tracking for months. Track it as an input to the eastern-flank pressure regime, not as a price catalyst.
Counter-thesis: verbal escalation from Russian diplomatic channels has been a leading indicator for concrete steps (border closures, airspace incidents, GPS-jamming pulses) in prior episodes — dismissing every TASS statement as text-only underweights the tail. This would be wrong if: a Finnish sovereign spread widens more than 10 bp against Bunds in the next two weeks, a border or airspace incident is reported by NATO or the Finnish Border Guard, or a specific Russian countermeasure (troop movement, treaty exit, targeted sanction) is announced within 30 days.

Nordic telecom equipment is repricing on M&A, not cycle
Kauppalehti flagged an Ericsson takeover approach in mid-July. Separately Nokia closed on NXP's Arizona indium-phosphide fab in early August — the AI-optical thesis moving into hard capex. Both names' technicals now read through a corporate-action lens, not a communications-equipment demand cycle. Nokia is above its 200-day but below the 30-week — a mid-trend reversal state — with the price at €8.16 sitting well below the €14.99 52-week high and well above the €3.44 52-week low. Ericsson is below both filters. If an Ericsson approach is confirmed, the Nordic long-Nokia / short-Ericsson pair on 5G share collapses into a merger-arb setup.
Counter-thesis: the Kauppalehti item is a single flag on an unnamed approach; without confirmation from Ericsson or an identified bidder, the "bid" is speculation and the technicals reflect ordinary post-earnings weakness. This would be wrong if: Ericsson formally acknowledges an approach or discloses a strategic review.

The catch ▸ Metsä Board's +11.3% week against a Barclays UPM downgrade
METSB.HE ran +11.3% on the week to €3.34 with RSI at 81, while Barclays cut UPM on new-capacity pulp price pressure (2026-08-10). Two Finnish forest-products names moving in opposite directions on the same underlying pulp-supply story is the observation: one packaging-board margin-recovery narrative (Husum drag receding) is being bid, one integrated-pulp exposure is being marked down. Whether the divergence sustains through the September broker refresh cycle is the read.

Novo's −7.8% week coincides with the US drug manufacturing-policy comparison against Eli Lilly and the broader GLP-1 competitive repricing that ran heavy across coverage on 2026-08-10 — RSI at 37 is now oversold territory. Metsä Board's RSI 81 is stretched — the technical extension is the read.
