The US curves are sending opposite signals this week — 2s10s steeper, 3M10Y flatter. Read together: markets are pricing fewer near-term Fed cuts while the long end is not yet endorsing the higher path. Credit nudged wider but stays near cycle tights. Labour readings remain benign.

§02 · Themes of the week

Heat wave breaks Danish records and lights up Nordic power

Denmark posted 37°C — the hottest day on its weather-service record — as the heat dome that has killed more than 1,300 people across Europe pushed east into Scandinavia. Helsingin Sanomat reports a Finnish nuclear reactor was taken offline on cooling-water heat-load constraints. The market response is what matters here: Nord Pool day-ahead averages in the cheap northern zones blew out — Finland +123.9% week-on-week to €41.99/MWh, SE1 +112.9%, SE2 +141.4%, NO4 +69.8% — while the chronically expensive southern zones (DK1 +26.2%, DK2 +24.9%) ratcheted less in percent terms but printed €145+/MWh absolute levels.

The direction: Continental cooling demand is pulling Nordic exportable surplus out, and the price convergence is doing the work cable infrastructure usually does. Counter-thesis — this is one week of weather; the reactor coming back online or a single rain front across southern Norway flips the export math back. This would be wrong if the next weather update shows Continental demand resolving by mid-July and Nord Pool northern zones return to single-digit prices within two weeks.

Maersk raises guidance as Trump tariffs front-load container demand

A.P. Møller-Mærsk raised its 2026 earnings outlook on 29 June, citing container-market strength tied to new US tariff schedules driving import pull-forward. Zim's shares moved in sympathy, and Maersk is rerouting SoCal import containers from BNSF to UP — a small operational tell that volume is real and time-sensitive, not paper. The Hormuz reopening adds optionality: Maersk has ships pre-positioned per the IMO evacuation plan.

The direction: shipper guidance and container-market commentary are pointing the same way this week, with operational reroutings corroborating the volume call. Counter-thesis — tariff front-loading is by definition borrowing volume from future quarters; the back half of 2026 disappoints if there is no follow-through demand. This would be wrong if Q3 booking data from Drewry or Xeneta shows volume continuing to grow into August rather than rolling over once tariffed inventory clears US ports.

Baltic security: the build-up gets concrete

Sweden is fitting guns to Coast Guard vessels — a step short of militarising the agency, but the first visible hardware response to repeated Baltic-cable incidents. Säpo went public again that Iran is recruiting Swedish minors for attentat operations on Swedish soil. Finland's defence ministry opened the door to allied nuclear weapons being stationed on Finnish territory, and Ilta-Sanomat ran a timeline showing how quickly Russia could mass tens of thousands of troops on the Finnish border. Two Russian union leaders fled to Norway after a police raid.

The direction: the threshold for Nordic defence-industrial spending and base hardening has dropped this quarter. Counter-thesis — these are individual stories, not a coordinated programme; Säpo warnings have been issued before and budget cycles move slowly. This would be wrong if Q3 Finnish and Swedish supplementary defence budgets come in at or below run-rate rather than stepping up.

The catch ▸ Norges Bank pause meets Nordic banks at cycle highs

A Bloomberg survey published 25 June has Norway's central bank pencilled in for one more hike, then a longer pause. DNB sits at 98% of its 52-week high (RSI 61.3); Nordea at 97% (RSI 56.3). Nordic regional banks have run hard into the pause window — an asymmetric "one more hike + longer pause" path is the kind of forward profile that tends to compress NIM expectations even when the spot rate moves up. The variable to watch shifts from distance to the hike to distance to the pause.

DK2 144.40 +24.9%
SE4 105.46 +8.4%
NO2 110.00 +7.6%

FI 41.99 +123.9%
NO4 38.46 +69.8%
SE1 38.38 +112.9%

The level distribution is unchanged — southern zones expensive, northern zones cheap — but the second derivative says the spread is closing. The percent moves are largest where the absolute level is lowest, which is what you would expect if Continental cooling demand is bidding Nordic surplus into export rather than letting it clear locally.

Cross-border flow MW (net, weekly) Δ 1w
NO2 → DE_LU 364 +343.4%
DK1 → DE_LU 418 +135.9%

SE3 → FI 338 –15.4%
NO2 → NL 0 n/a

The NO2→DE_LU and DK1→DE_LU step-ups are the clean physical confirmation of the price story. NO2→NL is flat at zero — NordLink either offline or both sides priced indifferent.
