§01 · Macro snapshot
Rates and labor prints below are US series (FRED).
| Series | Value | Prior | Δ | As of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10Y–2Y Treasury spread | 0.41 | 0.39 | +0.02 pp | 2026-09-04 |
| 10Y–3M Treasury spread | 0.87 | 0.83 | +0.04 pp | 2026-09-04 |
| High-yield OAS | 2.68 | 2.63 | +0.05 pp | 2026-09-07 |
| U3 unemployment | 4.1% | 4.1% | 0.0 pp | 2026-08-01 |
| Initial jobless claims | 206,000 | 204,000 | +2,000 | 2026-08-29 |
| Sahm Rule (real-time) | −0.07 | −0.03 | −0.04 pp | 2026-08-01 |
Curve is un-inverting on both benchmarks. High-yield spreads sit near cycle tights at 2.68. The Sahm Rule reads −0.07 — the labor market is not signalling recession. Two indicators disagree on the cycle: bond curves normalising towards a cut, labor prints saying nothing is broken.

§02 · Themes of the week
German corporate calendar is doing more than the news volume suggests
Germany drew 1,091 mentions this week, most of them political (AfD drone-production posture, Ukraine framing). The corporate signal underneath is more actionable. Allianz is reported preparing a £5bn / $6.77bn move for the UK's AA roadside-recovery business — Reuters (2026-08-29) and The Guardian (2026-08-30) carried it. That is an insurer buying an operating services company, not a peer. Siemens closed a chip-development partnership with NanoBridge Semiconductor on 2026-09-07 while the stock dropped 5.93% on the week without a clean single-name driver. BASF filed a US patent suit against Apple over face-authentication and secured a €260m Belgian grant for a carbon-capture project with Air Liquide.
Direction: German large-cap capital allocation is skewing towards services acquisition, IP enforcement and grant-subsidised capex — not organic industrial expansion. Counter-thesis: the three moves are unrelated corporate housekeeping — one insurer-services deal, one routine chip R&D partnership, one patent complaint — and reading them as a pattern is finding a shape in what is really a normal calendar. This would be wrong if Siemens's next mid-quarter update points to order-book weakness in factory automation, which would put the sell-off back into the industrial-cycle bucket.

France is running a two-speed capital market
France drew 1,071 mentions with the political noise (theme-park culture war coverage from The New York Times; sanctions coordination on Israeli settlements with the UK and Canada) sitting alongside a clean corporate split. LVMH (MC.PA) printed −6.34% on the week and broke below both its 200-day and 30-week moving averages, sitting €4 above its 52-week low. On the other side, Airbus reported end-August deliveries up 9% year-on-year (Reuters, 2026-09-07) and TotalEnergies completed a €93m five-day buyback while handing Papua LNG operatorship to ExxonMobil.
Direction: French luxury is in a proper technical breakdown while French industrials and energy are pruning portfolios and returning cash. Counter-thesis: LVMH's break-below could be Q3 supply-driven — margin traders forced out ahead of the ECB — not a demand signal. This would be wrong if Kering, Hermès or Richemont print flat to positive comps next quarter, which would isolate the LVMH move as name-specific.

Poland is holding rates against the easing consensus
Bloomberg headlined twice this week that the NBP is set to hold with inflation at a 14-month high. That puts Poland out of step with the ECB rate decision on 2026-09-10 and any subsequent Riksbank move on 2026-09-23. Separately the US resumed immigrant visa processing for Poland and Hungary while other paused countries remain frozen (Japan Times, 2026-09-09) — a small diplomatic re-warming that matters if the NBP is thinking about capital-flow support.
Direction: PLN differential story stays supported into month-end. Counter-thesis: if EU HICP prints above 2.5% on the next release, the ECB holds, the differential compresses and PLN gives back the trade. This would be wrong if the NBP surprises with a cut before month-end, which removes the divergence entirely.

The Dutch industrial capex cycle is running hard
ASML broke ground on a 350,000 sqm expansion campus on 2026-09-08 (Reuters, Ars Technica). Separately Ars Technica covered chipmakers agreeing to the process changes required to adopt ASML's $400M machines — an acceptance-of-tooling story, not an order-flow story. On the shipbuilding side, Damen and Everllence signed a framework agreement for the 175D marine engine.
Direction: Dutch industrial capacity build is a leading tell on 2027 semi and marine capex. Counter-thesis: chipmaker acceptance today does not equal order flow tomorrow — the campus footprint is a bet on demand ASML has not yet booked. This would be wrong if a major chipmaker publicly delays adoption of the new-generation machines into 2028 planning, in which case the campus becomes a capacity overhang.
