§02 · Themes of the week
External cycle turns up as Beijing readies domestic support
Two threads converging on Chinese asset prices. External: a Reuters poll circulated 2026-09-07 flags August export growth as expected to accelerate. Internal: Chinese life insurers are receiving state-directed capital injections, and analyst commentary in the Hong Kong financial press links the injections to an expected lift in mainland A-share allocations. Together they frame a modestly reflationary setup into Q4.
Counter-thesis. The two data points are a poll and analyst commentary — neither is a print. If the actual August customs data undershoots the poll or the insurer flows arrive later than the analyst read implies, the reflationary framing has to be pushed out.
This would be wrong if the August customs data prints below year-over-year zero growth next week.

China internet ADRs re-price down through the Q2 earnings cycle
BABA, PDD and JD all closed the week weaker, with BABA (RSI 33.1) and PDD (RSI 35.0) in oversold territory; JD sits at RSI 46.9. All three are below their 200-day and 30-week moving averages, and the internet-retail industry momentum flag is degrading. The proximate drivers are named. PDD's Q2 print landed with a sales beat and an earnings miss; a director sold 1,705 ADS at $82.20 on 2026-09-03. BABA is carrying a fresh investor class action filed 2026-09-06. JD announced a US$1.3 billion Hong Kong Northern Metropolis logistics JV on 2026-08-26, and one packet headline notes Michael Burry doubling down on JD stock. The tape is treating the pullback as a valuation reset.
Counter-thesis. This is not a reset, it is early distribution. Six-month returns are negative across the group and the momentum flag is degrading, not stabilising. If the group cannot rally with the risk backdrop into FOMC week, the read shifts from valuation to fundamentals.
This would be wrong if the cohort prints a positive week during the 2026-09-16 FOMC AND RSI-14 clears 50 on BABA and PDD.

Hong Kong positions as the mainland's autonomous-vehicle and capital-raise sandbox
Didi will apply for driverless-vehicle testing in Hong Kong this year. Baidu is already trialling in the city and has just been included in the Shenzhen–Hong Kong and Shanghai–Hong Kong Stock Connect programmes — the second step opens direct mainland-investor access to its shares. JD.com's simultaneously-announced US$1.3 billion Northern Metropolis expansion is aimed at the same industrial corridor. The pattern is coherent: Hong Kong is being positioned as the licensing venue and capital-raise venue for mainland-tech ambitions the US market will not price fairly at current spreads.
Counter-thesis. The sandbox is regulatory theatre, and Stock Connect flows are marginal to price discovery, which still happens in New York for the dual-listed names. If the HK lines persistently lag the ADRs through year-end, the venue-migration narrative is premature.
This would be wrong if BABA's Hong Kong line (9988.HK) trades at a persistent discount to the ADR after October.
